He took the train from Muenster to Paderborn today just to have a coffee with me. Our visit was quick, but quite enjoyable. And, Christof informed me of his upcoming wedding plans!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTDYXL7vElYiPriYiVN9Nn4vxAqKQvBRmyjUYbbtsMz1S1yhM2y-UYxFpeCm-vj2vfoaaheThrKMawN9WFwVJbEwiiQCBnxoq6KvxAFYXsOS12Rlf47-m86RaP8F0IpL2f0PBW_cI2LOxNhdytIc16bsVvjGp1A6SvGtzFu6M0RH5U-ls_lIc0JOwGVeU/s1600/IMG-20240315-WA0000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTDYXL7vElYiPriYiVN9Nn4vxAqKQvBRmyjUYbbtsMz1S1yhM2y-UYxFpeCm-vj2vfoaaheThrKMawN9WFwVJbEwiiQCBnxoq6KvxAFYXsOS12Rlf47-m86RaP8F0IpL2f0PBW_cI2LOxNhdytIc16bsVvjGp1A6SvGtzFu6M0RH5U-ls_lIc0JOwGVeU/w400-h300/IMG-20240315-WA0000.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Christof and Dwayne in Paderborn</div>Dwayne D. Obviously we should celebrate when our manuscripts are published, but we also discussed celebrating "revise and resubmit" invitations (and thus NOT receiving rejections). Instead we took the train into Brussels to see the Christmas market and eat some lunch. Shortly after we left the train station we saw <a href="https://www.cathedralisbruxellensis.be/en/" target="_blank">St. Michael's Cathedral</a>. This is where the king of Belgium was married. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid5AZJ2p0fdID3EoOjNaeUs3FxJUuJaCdA9nHqn7HCm3C7KPhCMOhN-V4lUAqtP-k6wPJKfuWXZCLns6ILJbb8Ok_LCcR0daCq00U8uAiT86wQlO053UMzvCB-qM-Vb5CBg5LQ1Tb-aZjV73luLF3fmcY3Zo0yQvKS1Co4T9OuwmbMIV58DQQ3FOFEwJg/s1024/IMG-20231203-WA0005.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="768" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid5AZJ2p0fdID3EoOjNaeUs3FxJUuJaCdA9nHqn7HCm3C7KPhCMOhN-V4lUAqtP-k6wPJKfuWXZCLns6ILJbb8Ok_LCcR0daCq00U8uAiT86wQlO053UMzvCB-qM-Vb5CBg5LQ1Tb-aZjV73luLF3fmcY3Zo0yQvKS1Co4T9OuwmbMIV58DQQ3FOFEwJg/w300-h400/IMG-20231203-WA0005.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Brussels Cathedral</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We went inside and saw beautiful stained glass windows and Nativity scenes from countries from around the world. It was about a 25 minute walk from our AirBnb apartment. One of the first people to introduce themselves was Jerry Barton. He asked us where we were from, and Candy said Ohio. He then asked where in Ohio, and she said "Perrysburg." He exclaimed, "Perrysburg?" I started to explain that it was close to Toledo when he said he was a 1966 graduate of Perrysburg High School. Actually, he grew up on Ft. Meigs Road, less than a mile from our house.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYMAWkkl22Mi7ZSHqbrsQ0OtKddXlInfevjXkHNDQlA3vG48EAqkSsnKY75HcEzhSmRrVybYs7qhnlU-fkBlg7CgiBBpZTdTSJMWsdBUkUKGtaIl51QVqpCwYdHYih-nZuCqKr8H_8lwPF-q70KlKBbLU4yC4-969qvKJODAy1rsr3OyLtLPVkc9uLGPs/s2048/IMG-20231008-WA0000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYMAWkkl22Mi7ZSHqbrsQ0OtKddXlInfevjXkHNDQlA3vG48EAqkSsnKY75HcEzhSmRrVybYs7qhnlU-fkBlg7CgiBBpZTdTSJMWsdBUkUKGtaIl51QVqpCwYdHYih-nZuCqKr8H_8lwPF-q70KlKBbLU4yC4-969qvKJODAy1rsr3OyLtLPVkc9uLGPs/w300-h400/IMG-20231008-WA0000.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Jerry Barton and Dwayne </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">He normally plays the organ for the <a href="https://www.emk.at/en/gemeinden/vienna-english-speaking" target="_blank">church service</a>, but did not do so today. The music included guitarist (and sometimes kazoo player) George Albert, who sang both German and U.S. songs. (I previously came in 2016 and in 2020...just before COVID.) We spent two full days discussing how to navigate the (academic) publication process. I shared several stories
about various research projects I have been involved with over the years, and 15 students asked several questions along the way. They seemed to particularly enjoy picking apart my "Service Loyalty" paper (from my dissertation) and discussing why they thought reviewers recommended rejection.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBEVnHgndUEJqCgG2sN2EWnlG4JEs2bHuVcJDE-L9KfYQkfaekDVaTPvbk9YXkgLwGuHtwlB9BcbF-UfKJIEHoZVMXQ_iRprQi8HIQsuS392SBCMu-vdLxgyzYKbkkeOz44cRZtxI75c4hvSArow4qagAI5dLbJjGvfLt3uSAZTNMCU0sWjs728hFZ4v0/s4000/0926231244_hdr.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBEVnHgndUEJqCgG2sN2EWnlG4JEs2bHuVcJDE-L9KfYQkfaekDVaTPvbk9YXkgLwGuHtwlB9BcbF-UfKJIEHoZVMXQ_iRprQi8HIQsuS392SBCMu-vdLxgyzYKbkkeOz44cRZtxI75c4hvSArow4qagAI5dLbJjGvfLt3uSAZTNMCU0sWjs728hFZ4v0/w400-h300/0926231244_hdr.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>The final step of the process, celebrating

(Samantha left for college and Anja moved into her bedroom for the 2013-2014 school year.) Since then, Anja and I have seen each other at least once in every calendar year. (<i>This year it was twice, as she was briefly in Ann Arbor, Michigan in April.</i>) Since I am on sabbatical, I arranged to be in the area of Stuttgart, Germany, to visit her parents Dieter and Helga. Although we told Anja we would be in Germany, we did not expect to see her on this trip, as she is in graduate school in Hamburg (the far north of Germany). Anja surprised us, though, by joining her (German) family to pick us up at the Stuttgart airport. We spent two full days with the three of them (five if you count her sister Katherine and her fianc<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">é</span>). Below is a selfie of Anja's two sets of parents.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMebPl0hObKvkPH_DZ6POH0DLRQbmCIWfdwfoN6TzZ9qc8tZqWd6i5shL9VVesQ-RntMHJSMHCjEsrAbefFyQCJ1oyrI2YBt8A0HlxYlby-TRDAB3nsT4JnUTcW4Dnf7LI7QKct1BzbbBHBgZC8us6NztepBJMdE3MFiBrxXtCfJ718VQskH8H7NmIQCE/s4656/0925231456.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3492" data-original-width="4656" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMebPl0hObKvkPH_DZ6POH0DLRQbmCIWfdwfoN6TzZ9qc8tZqWd6i5shL9VVesQ-RntMHJSMHCjEsrAbefFyQCJ1oyrI2YBt8A0HlxYlby-TRDAB3nsT4JnUTcW4Dnf7LI7QKct1BzbbBHBgZC8us6NztepBJMdE3MFiBrxXtCfJ718VQskH8H7NmIQCE/w400-h300/0925231456.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Dwayne D. Nearly 30 students attended the lecture, which was based on the (4th) European Edition of our textbook. So, lectures were pre-recorded and I have spent a couple of hours "live" each day with the students enrolled in the course. The discussion has been quite good, and the three student teams did a very nice job with the service blueprint exercise. The screenshot below includes all of the students...<br />

I was invited to conduct the "Publishing Scholarly Research" seminar again. (I first did this in May, 2017.) The location was great, and the attendees asked a lot of questions related to publishing.<br />

As is my custom, the last activity we had was a drink together at Denkbar (on campus) to (1) ensure all questions had the opportunity to be asked, and (2) verify that all students will know how to celebrate when the receive an "Accept" on their manuscripts. She was home from university (she attends the University of Erfurt). We caught up on each family's lives and did a lot of eating (of course!). During dinner that nigh at an Austrian restaurant in a village near Schlaitdorf, we reminisced about dinner the last time the six of us (see below) had a meal together. That was not quite three years earlier and it also included my daughter Mallory at an Italian restaurant in Tubingen, Germany--where she had an admirer! On Sunday, Anja, her father Dieter, and I went to the <a href="https://www.porsche.com/germany/aboutporsche/porschemuseum/" target="_blank">Porsche Museum</a> in Stuttgart. Anja thought that perhaps having two Dads there would increase her chances of us buying a Porsche for her to take home. (That didn't happen, but we at least let her think it COULD happen.)<br />

We had a good week of discussing issues related to publishing academic research. The final topic of the seminar was on "Celebrating Success." In the academic profession, scholars seldom experience success in their publication endeavors, and when they do have something to celebrate they do a poor job at celebrating. To ensure this group knows how to celebrate, the seminar ended with me purchasing each of them a drink (primarily tea, coffee, hot chocolate) and subsequently allowing them to show me they have sufficient celebration skills.<br />

I am sure the students appreciate a chance to get caught up on the readings, and I get the chance to give my voice a rest.<br />
<br />
How did I spend the day? I slept in, worked on my slides for the rest of the seminar sessions, and went for a walk along the Rhine River. I walked down to the "German Corner" (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsches_Eck" target="_blank">Deutsches Eck</a>, where the Mosel River meets the Rhine River); the weather was great (about 55 degrees).<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Festung Ehrenbreitstein, the fortress overlooking the German Corner (from the other side of the Rhine River).</td></tr>

Candy and I visited <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehrenbreitstein_Fortress" target="_blank">Festung Ehrenbreitstein</a> when we were in Koblenz in 2015. Quite impressive!<br />
<br />
For dinner, I met Clemens Koehler for dinner at Adaccio. Clemens was a Ph.D. student in Maastricht (in 2006) when I was there on a Fulbright scholarship. He was an intergral part of the infamous "Service Desk" in the Department of Marketing.<br />
